Immediately upon entering De St@rtbaan you can see what matters.The words 'Head' 'Heart' 'Hands' are painted on the wall in bright colours.

These three words are characteristic of the philosophy of our school and the way in which our education

is organized. "We want the children to develop in harmony". "The foundation is the development of the Heart". "In doing so, we provide a pedagogical climate with a structural approach to let children develop their social talents". In practice, this means that every day a circle discussion starts in which the children can share their experiences with others. Twice a week this is done on the basis of specially developed teaching materials where norms and values, talking and listening and expressing feelings are central. During the three other days, the circle discussion will focus on presenting the children in the broadest sense of the word.
This can vary from 'this I am' to 'this I have made or done'. The whole school breathes these presentations: everywhere students work can be seen.
"In this society children must be able to present themselves well"


The second key word of De St@rtbaan is 'Head'. This refers to the intellectual development of the child, such

as reading, calculation and language skills. The principles from Dalton education are central: responsibility, independence and cooperation. That means working according to three principles: Responsibility, Independence and Cooperation. We have high expectations of our students and also express them. We offer ambitious learning material in which we introduce the children in a gradual process to and give substance to the three basic principles. Under-, middle- and upper-level work each at their own level; in the substructure there is still a lot of teacher working, while in the superstructure much more emphasis is placed on independence, responsibility and cooperation. For example, we let the children think about the school organization at their own level in a children's mediation council and there are so-called children's guards who support the teachers on the playground ".
"Let go of what is possible, hold on to what!"


The third 'pillar' of De St@rtbaan is 'Hands'. This refers to the creative development of the child in the broadest sense  of the word: craftsmanship, song, dance, drama, technique.
At our school we cluster the time for the creative subjects. This results in our so-called creadagen (creative days) that take place once every three weeks. On a project basis, these creadagen content is given in collaboration with the Centre for the Arts (CKE), Artists in the Classroom (KIK) and the Foundation Youth and Profession. These projects have a joint start and conclusion and are further completed and elaborated at group level. In addition to our creadagen there are weekly lessons in writing lessons in the kindergarten groups and from group 3 there are lessons every two weeks visual education given by the CKE. Every year we organize a school-wide art theme with an art route through the district. 


The St@rtbaan is not a Dalton-school, but does base its teaching on the Dalton-principles:
1: Responsibility: this means that in a gradual process the school makes the child familiar with that principle and gives it substance. The playing toddler and the 12-year-old near-school leaver will each experience their responsibility to different degrees in their own way.  
2: Independence: connects with the fact that children want to be active, self-aware. Independence implies self-employment. The children work weekly on a weekly assignment, a certain amount of subject matter that must be made in an agreed time. This is an important way to shape the three Dalton principles.  
3: Working together: at our school the children work together a lot and are encouraged to help each other. Both in year groups and in small(er) groups. By working with these principles, our education is dynamic, challenging and tailored to differences between pupils.
